Introduction

Institute of Gas Smart Measurement, considering that Iran possesses vast reserves of oil and gas in the world, and on the other hand, faces a serious water crisis, the subject of measurement systems holds special importance. Due to existing gaps in the field of measurement in various industries including oil, gas, refining, petrochemical, water, and wastewater, there is a strong need to enhance this knowledge in different industries. In line with the promotion of measurement systems in the country, the Oil, Gas, and Product Metering Research Group of Iran University of Science and Technology commenced its activities in 2009 with the participation of university and industry elites, aiming to help enhance and improve the quantitative and qualitative measurement systems of hydrocarbon fluids in the country. In 2012, it obtained the license to operate as the only active metering pole in the country from the Ministry of Petroleum.

Considering the necessity of accurate, continuous, safe, and economical measurement of fluid flows and achieving technical knowledge for the construction of flow meters domestically, the Engineering, Research, and Technology Deputy of the Ministry of Petroleum, in collaboration with Iran University of Science and Technology, established the Institute of Gas Smart Measurement in December 2015. Furthermore, requests from other sectors, including the Ministry of Energy, for water measurement, led to the continuation of activities under the Flow Measurement Research Center, with the approval of the Board of Trustees of the University of Science and Technology since 2017. The main objective of establishing this research center is to provide a vision, present strategies, and develop short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans for accurate, continuous, safe, and economical fluid measurements in various industries.

Research Fields

The Iranian CFD Specialist Center has been active since 2006 in order to solve applied and fundamental problems related to computational fluid dynamics in various sectors such as industries, research centers, commercial centers, knowledge-based companies, and more. The coherence in promoting the culture of utilizing CFD research results in industries, conducting industrial projects, organizing short-term training courses and workshops is among the objectives of this center.

The activities of the center include:

1. Identifying industrial process bottlenecks and resolving them by employing top-level specialists.
2. Simulation of process equipment in various industries such as oil, gas, petrochemicals, refineries, chemical industries, power plants, and energy.
3. Study, investigation, and optimization with a focus on improving the efficiency of chemical processes, process flows, and dynamic analysis related to multiphase flows, flow in turbomachinery, complex fluids behavior, combustion, etc.
4. Simulation and design of cooling and heating systems, as well as HVAC systems for commercial, administrative, and residential buildings and facilities.
5. Development of software codes relevant to CFD with specific applications.
6. Simulation of the operational parameters’ impact on equipment with complex geometry or processes.
7. Design or redesign of process equipment.
8. Upgrading and improving quantitative and qualitative measurement systems for water and hydrocarbon fluids in the oil, gas, refining, and petrochemical industries.
9. Simulation, construction, and testing of industrial and multiphase flowmeters.
10. Production of smart fluids (nanocoolants, magnetic nanofluids, magnetorheological fluids, electro-rheological fluids).
11. Simulation and construction of intelligent devices such as magnetorheological dampers and valves.
